We know the end is near, but what will it look like? Well, at least for the upcoming Windows EOL, it will look like the end of warranties, support, monitoring, and security updates. Now that’s scary stuff.
But there’s no need for full-scale prepping. We know the EOL date (Jan. 14, 2020), and there are some simple steps you can take to keep your organization and PC safe as they transition into the next life (which is really just a new operating system).
Who does this end-of-support impact? Anyone using:
- Windows 7
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows Server 2008 R2
- Exchange Server 2010 messaging platform
If you’re still using these, odds are you purchased the extended support plan. The regular support plan lapsed a while back. Now these products are in the final phase of the Microsoft support life cycle, but they’re still (until Jan. 14) receiving security updates that protect you from cyber attacks.
What happens if you do nothing?
Well, there are two major risks for the “remind me later” crowd.
- Security breaches — Enterprising hackers are waiting for the Windows EOL so they can exploit vulnerabilities in the unsupported software.
- Back-ordered software — Because the whole Windows-using world is going to start upgrading at the same time, late orders are likely to end up delayed. This means increased vulnerability and security risks. If you’re a WIndows 7 user, take this risk seriously and start the process to upgrade now. Windows 7 has a huge following, and there are going to be a lot of fellow users trying to upgrade at the same time.
